Best beer Brands - What to Order in an Australian Pub.

If you're planning a trip to Australia, chances are you'll be hitting a pub or two during your travels. You can also occasionally find some of its beer exports on the shelves of specialty beer shops and pubs in other countries, but some of the best beer brewers don't send their wares overseas. There are several brands you'll find everywhere you go down under, but there are also some tasty lesser-known craft brews no beer connoisseur would want to miss. Here's a list of some of the beer choices - ubiquitous and not so ubiquitous - that you'll find.

  • Cooper's Pale Ale, Sparkling Ale. You'll find both of these popular brews on tap at many pubs throughout the country. The pale and sparkling ales are just two of at least a dozen beers brewed in this Adelaide area facility. Cooper's is the largest Australian-owned brewery.
  • Toohey's New, Old, and Extra Dry. You'll find these "macro-brews" pretty much everywhere in Australia.
  • Malt Shovel James Squire. This is one of the craftier large scale beer brewers. Highlights include Stowaway India Pale Ale, The Chancer Golden Ale (English-style Summer Ale), Nine Tales Amber Ale, Jack of Spades Porter. It also rolls out quality seasonal brews..

Much like the United States, Australia's blossoming craft brewery scene is blossoming. You'll find excellent brewpubs throughout the country. Among notables are Little Creatures (Fremantle, Western Australia), Matilda Bay (Dandenong South, Victoria), and HopDog Beer Works (South Nowra, NSW).
